Ultimate VOIP Solution for Free Calls- Part 1

(For full text with comments please click on the title)

It has been a quiet 15 days at VOIP Guide. No great VOIP solutions to make free calls lately. Well the wait is over, Its time to welcome perhaps the best voip solution to make free calls. I will be splitting this solution into multiple posts to accommodate exact information related to multiple countries.

I would like to thanks Erion (Canada) for sharing this workaround and his constant followup with me for this great voip solution. I give him full credit for the solution.

Based on my testing(i could be wrong), This workaround will only work for

US/Canada, Portugal, Argentina, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom.
Also includes:
Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Russia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Seoul, South Korea; Taipei, Taiwan; Monterrey, Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Puebla, Mexico; Warsaw, Poland.
Mobile numbers are excluded except in US(excludes Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and Singapore.

I couldn't test India or Pakistan numbers but I suggest you guys can test and let everyone know the results. The setup is the same so it shouldn't be difficult for anyone to test it based on the following guide.

Please read the following guide very carefully and do not miss any step or settings:

  1. Register your CellPhone/HomePhone with PhoneGnome
  2. PhoneGnome will ask you to verify your number by calling back on the registered number, so don't forget to that. Follow instructions on screen.
  3. When logged into their website (PhoneGnome) go under the features tab and activate Remote Access. Edit the settings to Ring SoftGnome with Home Phone:Active by ticking the box. Now save.
  4. On the same screen, Click View Sip Settings to see Sip Username, Password, and Sip proxy. Store it somewhere or keep this window open.
  5. Now go to VoXalot
  6. Get an account with a six digit number you like.
  7. Log into your VoXalot account, add PhoneGnome (using Sip Settings- PhoneGnome SIP username/password and proxy you got in step 4) as a provider, but set both Active and Register to No.
  8. Set your codecs as follows ulaw;alaw;g726;g729;ilbc;gsm, Save.
  9. Under Member Details on VoXalot, set Voicemail to No and leave the rest of the settings as is. Save the settings.
  10. Now on Voxalot under Forwarding set to forward all calls to your Cell Number (Number you registered with PhoneGnome without country code e.g 9810222121) and select provider as PhoneGnome. Save.
  11. Now people can call you using any of these local Access Numbers
  12. Now once you are connected, call Access Number then enter your extension (*010+ your 6 digit VoXalot username), wait for about 30 secs and it will connect.
Now those who don't have local access numbers, you can use icall or any other software allowing free USA calls to dial access numbers in USA and then dial phonegnome extension.

I highly recommend everyone try this setup for their own country and let us know the result, so I will update the second part of this solution. More free calls workaround hacks are on the way, I should be able to post them after some initial testing.

Do drop comments and let us know your success stories :-)

Hi there, I tried following but it seems that I cant work it out...
I am in Italy and trying to call back singapore...or vice versa for a singapore to call me at Italy... Problem is there is no local number for Singapore. Maybe you could explain a little more on how this works?

Thanks mate.

Even though the described steps are little tedious; i done it step by step; but at last when i dial the US access nos and then enter *010 + 6 digit access no. i am hearing only some messages which i don't understand.

The no. i registered is a UAE mobile no.

What's the point of this workaround?

Callforward to mobile phone via Phonegnome and Voxalot? Why should I use especially Phonegnome as VoIP provider for that? Why not e. g. Voipcheap?

I am always keen on new solutions and maybe I understood something wrong. But as I see it I do the same yet for months with Voxalot and Voipcheap. That costs some Cents or is free, depending on the country.

Or is your solution free?

Hi vinay,

I really appreciate you to provide these information on this site. It is very very helpful and I really enjoy reading them not just to make free calls but for the knowledge I get from reading these Posts. You do a very good job.

I was trying this solution through Voxalot. I did not understand the step 12. Can you please let me know the dial pattern with an example.

Thanks

Dear Vinay, I have done upto Step 10. Thereafter, I dont understand what to do for making calls to India. "people can call you" as you said in step 11 means cant I call others from my phone. This is where I am stuck. Please elaborate.

Hi vinay,
thanks for the update.

tried to register with phonegnome but i am getting below error.
Failed: Country specified does not match IP address 172.214.250.227

and i am registering from UK.and i typed my number as +441473XXXXX5

and also tried with 00441473XXXXX5 but still i am getting same error.
can you please help in this.

Vinay said...

I knew the steps are hard to setup and it would be difficult for starter to get this to work. Still am happy some people got this to work.

Markus, phonegnome gives you this service free of cost unlike other providers. i am sure there are some others, which i would be covering soon

Vinay said...

the guy who made calls to Monterrey Mexico, can you clarify if you guys use 01 for even local calls? if yes, then you did it right.

Vinay said...

As i said earlier, India might not work coz there is no PSTN termination allowed (for free) although i wanted to confirm this.

Vinay said...

santosh, your problem is with ur ISP or internet routing. Are you sure you are using UK internet? i faced the same issue when i was in HK (at airport) trying to register a singapore number yesterday.

Vinay said...

Guys, you need to dial local access numbers in your country (if its available), it will be a local call for you. Then dial *010voxalotnumber (e.g: my voxalot number is 100203 then after connecting to gateway, i would dial *010100203)

Those who dont have access numbers in their home country, can dial any USA access numbers from icall and follow the steps.

If you want to use any other voip service to call gateway, then that service needs to send proper DTMF tones to the gateway. For e.g Earthcaller does not send DTMF tone for * so the calls fails you get busy tone

Anonymous said...

the guy from Monterrey here...
the prefix 01 is used to make long distance calls into all Mexico
If i dont write it down the call cannt be forwarded.
The area code for Monterrey is 81 so i must put 0181XXXXXXXX...
maybe i am wrong but this is the only way it works. If there is someone here from Mexico can correct me if there is another possible solution. Thanks again

Vinay said...

thats strange, but did you register your number in phonegnome with 01 prefix?

It should work only with the phonegnome registered number format.

thanks for sharing ur experience. Now we can look beyond our solution :-)

Vinay said...

guys, if anyone know any SIP provider for India, let me know. We can them possibly connect to india as well.

hi vinay i read your blog daily and i was excited about the free calls however i was disappointed about your latest post i followed the entire proceedure and after 3 hours it came to my understanding that i can only make calls to my USA number so i wonder about the free international calls.. really the way you explained in this blog about the latest free calls has left every one confused me inclusive. i hope the second part will make more sense
MASHUNA

Vinay said...

MASHUNA, unfortunately you still didnt understand how the whole thing works.

This is indeed for free international calls to many destinations almost across europe and some part of asia (singapore, malaysia, australia etc)

When i was referring to call USA gateway number, that doesnt mean you can only terminate calls in usa. Once you are connected to usa gateway if you dial the *010voxalot number, it will forward your call to the number you registered in phonegnome.

i know this is difficult to understand for a novice but try hard you will get there.

thank you vinay although it still hasnt cleared up anything. how can i make international calls? when i dial the access numbers it goes to my mobile and when asked for a pin only my pin to my phone's voicemailbox is accepted not.it doesnt request me to enter a destination number. so my question is how do i make the international call after going through this elaborate proceedure?
thanks

Hi Vinay

I did as it was told with my UAE no to check it, Once registering with the phonegnome and voxalot as specified in the instructions provided.

I tried the pstn numbers specified by the sipbroker with more than 2 or 3 countries viz us, aus, belgium, argentina etc. but they are requesting for a local no there, but when i checked the phonegnome call analysis the calls placed gets incremented, and I'm not able to receive the call here.

As in step 2 of your instruction phonegnome did not verify the no by calling back as you said instead I received a verification mail only.

the thing here to make the hack work perfectly i think is to get a pstn service that will work outside the local numbers since UAE (many asian countries) does not lie in the free calls list I suppose. (my guess only)

"SIP-Code SIP Proxy Provider name
*010 us.voxalot.com VoXaLot (U.S.) India [Home]"

The sipbroker site says voxalot (US) is operated from India. So try for a working hack from this sip provider in your next update.

Vinay said...

Mashuna,

why gateway will callback on your number? You are doing something wrong.

You are suppose to call the gateway and enter the extension in proper format.

The number you are registering with phonegnome should be the number you want to call to not your own number. I am sure you registered with your own number.

Vinay said...

taj, from where did u get that info on voxalot?

just tried with US Mobile phone no and it works fine!!! thx a lot. However, I was wondering if we can forward number from Voxlot to other VOIP providers such as Gizmo? coz I'm trying to set up an account for my girlfriend in UK ;she's really confused with the registration process

Omer said...

Hurray!! I can call India!! I have tried BSNL & Airtel landlines, Aircel & Hutch Mobiles all works fine

Just Make sure when u forward calls in VoXaLot, use "0"

Example: for chennai landline Phones use Forward to : 04422244XXX

and for mobiles Forward to : 0994411XXXX

In PhoneGnome check out "call analysis Tab" if there is any indication for "Calls Placed" then u hv to play around with your number & country state codes. Else you wud hv gone wrong with setting proxy or codecs.

hepi VOIPing!!

Hi Everybody,

I originally posted this solution here http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5250206&postcount=33

--What is the idea behind it?--

The idea behind this is that someone can call you from any country where there is an access number.

The call to them is local, the call to you is free if you have free unlimited incoming.

So let's say you have a friend in London UK, he calls 020-7100-6747
then is asked to enter an extension, he enters *010+Your 6 digit VoXalot.

Let's say you live in the US and have a US number, your phone will ring, your own number will show as CID, and you'll be talking to your friend. The call is free for you if incoming calls are free. For your friend in London it's a local call.

For those having problems with the * and wanting numbers closer to India, there is an update involving TPad, which would let you run through the same scenario above, but with an access number in Pakistan, and no * required.

--Can you use this to make free calls?--

This is for receiving free calls in your Cell/Landline.

Not really for making calls, unless of course whoever you are calling is also registered with PhoneGnome, then you can use the PhoneGnome Website to make free calls to that person.

Also using any of the SipBroker access numbers, and the SipCodes, you can call a number of people who have voip. Dial the cheapest Access Number for you, the *SipCode + the Voip number their provider has given them. Check sipbroker.com for both SipCodes and access numbers. You can use access numbers and SipCodes to call other people on VoIP, without registering for all the stuff above.

--What about the failed: not within IP range message?--

You have to register from an IP in the country that corresponds with the number you are using. If that's not working, find a working proxy (this may be useful http://www.samair.ru/proxy/type-01.htm)

--What if you followed the steps, and still doesn't seem to work?--

-Make sure the number to which you are forwarding in VoXalot,is in the same format as it appears in your PhoneGnome Account Home Page, without dashes, spaces, and country code.
-If that doesn't work, enter the number in voxalot the same way someone else in your city would dial it to call you.
-Finally if that doesn't work, enter it in the same way someone else in your country would dial it to call you.
-Make sure your number and location match. So if usin a UK number, make sure you specify your location as UK as well.

--Is PhoneGnome neccessary, couldn't I use another provider--

Of course you could, you can substitute any provider for PhoneGnome (with some other providers, you may have to set Active and Regsiter to yes). The thing about PhoneGnome is, it doesn't cost anything to forward the call to a number that's registered with them. Other providers may or may not charge you, and may or may not require an upfront fee/credit for registering.

Hope this helps,
Erion M

Erion M said...

KillBill,

I have added sip.net4india.com to SipBroker.

Now contact either Vinay, or me, and give him the number that provider has assigned you (your internal voip number, or if your username is numeric with that provider, that that will do)
Now someone can call AccessNumber then *8483+Your Internal Voip Number, and if all goes well, your voip line should ring, and someone from anywhere where there is an access number can call you as if you were local to them. If this works, it would work whether or not you go through the PhoneGnome ritual.

Another extra:

If you have a VoipProvider in India that let's you make cheap/free calls within india. Follow the steps above, but use your Indian Voip Provider instead of PhoneGnome (you are gonna have to test if setting active and register to No works for you, or play with those settings). If all goes well someone can call Access Number + *010+VoXalot ID, and your telephone in India should ring.

Thanks erion for updating SIP Broker list. You have been a great help.

I am not sure if we can use sip.net4india for this exercise. I didnt find any option to register with them. Maybe they have a paid service.

can someone clarify? else i will contact them sometime soon

Vinay said...

can some more people try omar's workaround, it seems to be working. I will be testing it tonight.

Vishnu said...

Hi Vinay and others.
As mentioned by Omar and Soniya, calls to India works but these are paid calls. If you check carefully, on registration you are given some voovox balance (something around 0.49USD), Calls forwarded to Indian number are settled via this amount and as soon as you run out of balance you will not be able to make calls. It works well for countries where calls are free.
But for India you get about 5 minutes of free calls.
Best Wishes.

Shiju said...

Hey Vinay thanks a lot the info
It was really hard to do the steps and with the help of OMER.. it worked like a charm

I just tried with my India number
Now I dont know whether it is limited to just 5mins or can we talk unlimited? Pls clarify

Vinay said...

i have the same doubt if it will work beyond mere 5 mins. i will be trying some other alternatives this weekend and should make Part 2 of the post. Hopefully i find a good alternative solution on the similar line.
