since yesterday night (singapore time), Skype started facing issues related to login. Earlier some people spread rumours such as Skype's server aint working, Skype is out of business but once the picture was clear it wasnt the case. People just love to hype the scene.
The Real issue was because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user’s own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network. We at VOIP Guide feel, the issue was related to authentication algorithm used on their P2P networ which uses a very speculative "supernodes" technology. If anyone of you have read our very interesting article on "skype supernodes and vulnerability", you would probably know how insecure skype could be.
What possible went wrong at Skype:
All Skype users possess digital credentials, it is possible for any Skype user to verify the identity of any other Skype user. This process is called authentication: the proving of each party's true identification to the other.
Now Since Skype uses Hybrid P2P, its essential to know identification for each party in order to verify a user and transmit data as legitimate packet. If skype server side authetication algorithm is broken, the authentication can't be completed and that could lead to anyone breaking into skype system and acting as a "Skype" user and send unencrypted data over skype network leading to more serious hacking event.
To avoid such thing from happening, Skype has currently disabled authentication for all users and working to fix the algorithm.
How they are recovering:
Villu Arak At Skype posted on their blog, that We’re on the road to recovery. Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continue throughout the day.
Latest Update from VOIP Guide:
Here in singapore, we still can't access Skype. Even after repeated attempts, can't login to Skype. I suggest everyone to give your latest update and let us know if skype is working for you.
Although, Skype had disabled the downloads. It seems the downloads are working now, If you don't have a latest version of skype maybe you can download it now

Skype login has been failing all over Europe since at least late morning yesterday, Thursday 16th August. Login has since been intermittant but completely unstable. To suggest, as Skype did earlier yesterday, that a few users were having problems logging in was simply untrue. Possibly, Skype is concerned about legal action for loss of service as the company markets its products heavily and persistently to SME and SoHo operations. Any user, but particularly busines owners, need to know exactly what the problems are affecting the service so that either the individual or a small organisation at least has the option ot make an informed decision. In my view, Skype is reluctant to be definitive about the problem for fear of losing subscribers/customers to alternative providers. However, any IT company that cannot provide a detailed explanation of a problem to at least the informed observer should be avoided. It shows lack of respect for the individual and company alike. An unhappy business and personal user.

Prague, Czech Republic..cca every 20 minutes skype gets connected for several minutes, then offline again...its happening the whole afternoon..not regularly...during writing this comment (UTC+2) is skype connected and working for 10 minutes.

My guess skype is as leak as a windows install.
6 months ago on my dad's pc we experienced enormous uploads on skype ports in just a few days. The problem was solved when I uninstalled it. Waited a day to check then reinstalled it and yes upload volume went up again. So i unstalled it again. It was a very strange phenomenom.
But what commonly known alternatives are there?
00:40 CET All seems well now Skype upa and running though still some problems in some areas with Skypein.
