Lingo VOIP Phone service review

(For full text with comments please click on the title)

Are you looking for that perfect Residential Home VOIP Phone line? In our VOIP Phone reviews series, today we are discussing one of the award winning VOIP services.

We discussed about Ooma a few months back. Our review was so popular that it received more than 80,000 page views within 2 months. We received positive and negative feedback of the service. People were already asking for more VOIP service reviews to better compare and signup for that best home phone service.

Today we will be discussing an award winning VOIP service called Lingo. Lingo has quickly emerged as a top Internet phone service in a market projected to grow to 16.5 million U.S. consumers by 2008 (Source: Frost & Sullivan) and its run by Virginia-based Primus Telecommunications Group who handle over 2 billion VOIP minutes annually.

Now lets analyse What Lingo Offers their customers.

Lingo VOIP Plans:

As you can see Lingo Phone is currently running a exclusive promotion which will give you 3 months of Free Lingo service. This is valid only on Lingo Chatter Box plan, which costs about $21.95 per month and gives unlimited calls to over 20 odd countries (US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Finland, Austria, Luxembourg, Norway, Vatican City, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, & South Korea)

All Lingo service plans consist of the following Features:

Besides the standard VOIP Phone features, you will also get,

1) FREE unlimited calling to other In-Network Lingo subscribers
2) Local Number Portability so you can keep your existing phone number
3) Lingo Phone Adapter/ Lingo Router (Linksys Adapter given away to you for FREE)

They also have a great yearly Lingo Plan called Talk 365 which will give you unlimited calls to US, Canada and Puerto Rico for $195/- year.

When we wrote JoiPhone reviews, people asked us to do more research on TOS of VOIP Providers. So we did it this time, Lingo's fair usage policy says, You can make about 5000 minutes of calls every month without a hitch, If you limit exceeds they might terminate your service with a valid reason.

Lingo also offers hassle free 30 days money back guarantee, if ever you are not satisfied with their service.

Now being a reader of VOIP Guide, you need to get some special discounts. We are throwing in 3 months of FREE Lingo Service for you. Remember to enter Lingo Coupon Code: SAPEXC on Order page.

Thanks vinay. Sounds like another tempting deal. Just woke up to check your blog this morning and i am prolly gonna check this out. Will let you know if i sign up. I make calls to canada mostly and it costs me around $40 per month so this looks lot cheaper.

Vinay, non voip-guide readers too get the first 3 months free with the code "DECSPEC". Could you let us know the difference between the code you mentioned (SAPEXC) and the one above. Also let us know if there are any other advantages using the code SAPEXC.

Lingo is not bad, but be careful of the hidden charges.

For example, for basic $7.95 account, there are compulsory $3 charges for emergency services, regulatory services, etc. Not a huge amount, but something to keep in mind when comparing prices.

Also, the soft client costs $10/month extra, when most other services have it for free.

Finally, there is no SIP entry point into the service, so it is not expandable in any useful way.

On the positive side, the call quality is usually fine, the emailed voicemails are great and the bill is comprehensive (if not comprehensible)

Does lingo use the 723 or 729 codec? In Cameroon in Africa we do not have big bandwidth and we can only use the 723 and 729 Codec for VOIP.

You prolly cant use lingo outside america or you can use it at your own risk.

Nice service but uses India for tech support and they stink. No local US number. Techs do not understand there own plans.Waiting 6 weeks for a local exchange and still no luck. All seem lost an how to fix anything.

I recently got Lingo phone service. Unfortunately, there were some things they didn't tell me. Had I known, I would not have gotten it. First, since it hooks up to your DSL modem it makes all your phone jacks inoperable. I thought I could wire them in, but it doesn't work. If you have an alarm system which uses a phone line, it also will not work. I spent half a day back and forth between Lingo and Brinks and had a Brinks tech out to try to make the alarm work. It was a no go and I had to switch back to my old Verizon service. When I called to cancel my Lingo, they told me I would be charged a $100 cancelation fee. It didn't matter to them that they had lied about its not working with my alarm system. Also, try getting an American to take your calls. They are all in India.

I am not surprised at what GL said. "$100 cancellation fee" when circumstances were beyond the user's control??? UNACCEPTABLE! Sadly, there are many such companies without compassion or rationality. I would have been bloody furious beyond measure if I was in GL's shoes. I hope everyone reads this and stays away from such parasitical companies. And, Vinay, I hope you will not be promoting such crap companies. It ruins your reputation. There is no longer good customer service - "scam the sucker for all he is worth". That seems to be the motto. Guess what? Customers will fight back. I would have signed up with Lingo had GL not mentioned this outrage. Thank you, GL!
