3G is becoming a popular word in Telecom industry in India. With VOIP is on the verge of reforms,3G is the next big market for India. BSNL, a large telecom operator wants to give private telecom operators like bharti, vodafone a run for its money by giving away 3 months of Video Calling FREE.
If you own one of the latest mobile handsets and have BSNL service then you can receive free 3g video calls. However the biggest catch is its only free to receive a video call and not to make it :-) The good old sneaky way of giving freebies in India.
No BSNL is hoping that more users use Video calling feature. Well, Its highly unlikely to become a standard very soon but will eventually be a part of everyday usage.
A good addition to the existing 3G service will be of course the ability to use a Video Conference Calls Service with 3 or more participants in the call.
I know many Indians are excited to use 3G to use Free VOIP services coz VOIP over 3G would be lot faster than GPRS, however you must note that 3G is often costlier than GPRS and definately costlier than a better broadband option Wifi.
The best way to use VOIP is actually through wifi. You can setup a Wifi at your home for making free voip calls when you are home.
VOIP on the other hand becoming a joke with SIP calls being charged in India since they also attract service taxes lol. I believe if India needs massive reforms in Telecom, they need get over the service tax era and let SIP/VOIP services roam free.
Are you a BSNL customer? will you use 3G? will you use 3G for VOIP?

Does anybody know of how to make video calls over wifi ?
you may find SIP based Video calling services like Flashphone's Zingaya Media Server is now able to make video calls from flash to SIP soft/hardphones which support H.263 video codec.
Don't you think they should offer 1 month of free outgoing too instead of only incoming for 3 months?
---by this kind a service, They are helping other companies i think.
anyways, i am from usa so just matter of opinion. can't "try" personally
This is certainly a good news. I just don't want to whine about for the sake of it but I would be more happy when I see the quality and real plans.
Last december while in India Airtel sold me an "Edge" plan for Rs.15/day. The data was unlimited. I was so happy to have it and it was only until I configured it on my device.
I use exchange server sync for office email. It was real pain (I mean PITA) to sync my contacts, email and calendar. The browsing experience was shear namesake. Yahoo took 5 mins to load.
Hope 3G doesn't have just ad stunt and brings some real value to the customers. Hopefully they won't impose download limit on the plan as they do for broadband. And BTW saying 256kbps to home internet as "Broadband" is nothing but joke. Shame on TRI or whoever defined that term.
Lets hope we see good days with 3G and some good luck for home internet too.
Thanks,
Umesh
lol umesh. Seriously, we can't trust indian broaband companies and telecom operators. What they advertise, we never actually get it.
I seriously hope 3G is not just a hype but seriously has some advantage, or else they will offer a few more kbs over GPRS and call it 3G.
Nil,
1 month trial offer would be great. However, i doubt they will offer this. Imagine how people would rip them off overnight :D
however, offering BSNL to BSNL free video calling can be possible and i believe they should offer this. May be just cap it for a few hundred kbs each day.
lol, I was just thinking about Indian 3G world. Beside corporate world, scandal video delivery(MMS) becomes even more easier and faster and free for three months. :).
It was just a joke...
Is that possible to India to find a VOIP phone service like vonage sooner, where we can call unlimited to any part of the india in landline or cell?
