Google Voice VOIP Service opening today

google voice
Get Ready for Google Voice,a VOIP Service which can blow away many competitors by its sheer brand name is all set to go public today.

As we predicted a few days back that Google has bought over 1 million numbers, obviously there is a reason to it and we clearly predicted that Google Voice VOIP service will launch this june and it seems that we are getting clear indications that its happening today.

The news first broke on Twitter and it says Google Voice will begin sending out invitations to users as of today. If you are one of the users who submitted google voice invitation form you might just get lucky today or soon.

Apparently Google Voice team showed up at NBC show today morning, checkout the video:

As NBC noted, Google Voice will make things difficult for some VOIP Providers but at the same time, It will create opportunities for other VOIP/SIP Providers to start working with Google Voice as a partner service or intergrate google voice into their own phone service like Ooma Google Voice intregration.

I hope most of you manage to get the google voice invitations today and can enjoy this VOIP service.

Just go to http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html, and register for the invitation. If lucky enough, you'll get it.

I wonder which server are they using? SER, Cisco, Avaya, Asterisk, freeswitch???

Thanks you, blog, for great news.

Vinay @ Others:

I managed to get an invite by signing up with them on the list. Since, I'm based off India, the invite did not work - stating that it is available only in the US.

So, I managed to get a US proxy and then I was able to sign using the invite.

As the first step, it asks us to register a number. You can choose from area codes of almost all the 50 states. Since I'm an IT professional, having an 1-650 area code ( silicon valley ) is considered very good. When I entered the zip code for one of the cities in Silicon Valley, I got a lot of numbers as options. I chose the one which looked really fancy to me.

It then asks you to enter a forward number. Thats the number calls get forwarded to. I gave my US voip number from IPKall configured to my PAP2. I got a call from GOogle and it asked to confirm if it was me by entering the number displayed in the page. I did that and i was confirmed.

The UI is slick and we can send SMS to almost any place of the world. I tried sending an SMS to my India mobile number and message got delivered in seconds. It was awesome.

I will post more comments after fiddling more with it ...

Also, I found out that, they forward calls to Gizmo Project. Technically, Gizmo uses SIP - this means Google can forwaRD to other SIP addresses in future.

Does anyone have the international call rates ?

International call rates here: http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?answer=141925
as you can see they are terrible (use BetaMax or providers like callwithus.com or future-nine.com for best rates) also quality for international calls with GV is really bad, the worse I have found. But for US and for text messaging GoogleVoice is the best!
