After Blackberry India might ban Google Voice and Skype

Share

India is on the verge of cracking on the messaging and voice based services which sends encrypted data which is not readable over internet. There is a strong rumour that after Blackberry India might be looking at possible ban for Skype and Google Voice.

Blackberry got into serious trouble last few weeks after Indian and Saudi Arabian government demanded RIM to make them available all messages sent via blackberry which is currently not possible as RIM servers are not in India or Saudi Arabia.

I personally do not use Blackberry as I have nothing do hide about :-) but I know people who are totally shocked this decision, they don't want the government to know about their activities, personal, social or business.

Although Indian government have given RIM upto Aug 31 to fix this issue, no one knows if RIM can comply to the demands.

Today, Financial Times reports that after blackberry, India will target Google Voice and Skype. Why would they do that? Well, they basically don't want you to do activities which can't be traced back to you.

"There was consensus that there [is] more than one type of service for which solutions are to be explored. Some of them are BlackBerry, Skype, Google etc," according to the department's minutes. "It was decided first to undertake the issue of BlackBerry and then the other services."

What would be life with Blackberry, Skype and Google Voice? Whats going to get a ban next? Let us know your feeling about this possible crackdown.

Now what will be there condition ?

this is all happening because of strong lobbying of the indian market leader nokia who see blackberry as threat to its market, and about the banning the skype and other voip govt is doing is for the sake of impressing the giants of mobile telephony market who see skye and voip service as the threat to their market, it has nothing to do with the silly security concern! from all the silly security concern thing which is actually the lobbying, we can understand the very low peneratration of broadband inindia

i have found this trend of governments banning blackberries, and other communication devices sickening... i was unaware of how secure blackberry communications were until this story broke in the news, and while this does have the potential to be used by the wrong people for the wrong reason, that is not the main appeal to a smart phone, and when it comes to smart phones with full qwerty keyboards, blackberry is still the leader... this is similar to gun control - added restrictions only harm the law abiding, as those who are intent on breaking the law will continue to find ways to communicate with as little chance at being monitored as possible...

question - would all blackberry devices become completely useless in countries that ban their use, or would access to blackberry services be blocked so that the phone could still operate, although not to its full potential?

i have a blackberry, but i guess being in the US as i assume RIMs servers are, i do not see use ever being banned here, especially with the PATRIOT ACT, and all of the warrant-less wiretapping

freedoms are eroding globally due to "terrorism" and "the economy" we will soon all be puppets (although most of us already are)

FYKI Blackberry has agreed to share their info. from 1st. Sept .. now stay put with your gadget love rather than Nation Love/Pride !!

Even i agree government is creating nuisance under false pretext of "security". ( http://indiangridlock.blogspot.com/2010/08/senseless-blackberry-controversy.html ) Instead of taking concrete action to secure our country what are we doing? Creating more babus with red light fitted ambassadors who will only create more congestion in roads when they are bored of entertainment from people’s private conversations? And who are we following? Gulf countries? Whose policy we will follow next- pakistan and taliban? All this only diverts attention from real security threat- incompetent and corrupt police and coast guard and nonchalant politicians.

To Mr. National Pride:

I do not live in India, but here in the U.S., I would consider it a point of national pride not to spy on the people. A nation is not an entity in itself; it is a collection of its people, who are ultimately more important than any law or security measure. The question which must be asked is, to the majority of India, which is more important? Freedom or security? If they would say freedom, then national pride would demand that Blackberry be allowed to operate as they had. Anything else would be a stab at the very soul of India: its people.
