Magicjack launched Magictalk Web based Free Calling Service

Share

After being in the Home VOIP Phone business for years, Magicjack is now preparing to launch a web based free call service to make totally free calls from computers, smartphones and iPads.

Users will get a phone number associated with the magicTalk software, and they’ll also be able to transfer their existing numbers to the service for a fee. MagicJack users will be able to do the same soon. The software will be available next week for Windows and Mac computers — with iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry versions to follow in September or October reports Venturebeat

Important points to note that free calling service magictalk will only work for calls made to USA/Canada numbers. There will be no time limits on calls and users would only get charged if they try to make a call while outside the U.S. and Canada. That means, don't call to USA/Canada numbers while you are away or you will be charged.

Guys, Would you try Magictalk? Let us know

what if you ran thru a VPN or proxy from abroad? would you be able to make "free" calls with this service then, or would that just introduce too much latency to make the service usable? not really asking for myself, because i do not travel abroad really, but just a general question that i am sure other readers would want answered...

another question.. anyone know what ever happened to the femocell that magicjack was supposed to be selling sometime this year that would work with GSM phones - even ones that do no have active service? i said from day one about that service that the FCC and cellular carriers would never let that happen, but i never heard anything about this in months, anyone have any news?

Most VoiP providers these days offer some degree of Free Calls. Typically they offer free call to anyone else on the same network.

It sounds like Magicjack are taking advantage of the free local calls that the US phone companies have offered. Assuming that the quality is good then it has to be a good deal for the US.

I am totally frustrated. I am a magicjack subscriber that has signed up for five years, with about 3.5 years to go... Now comes magictalk, which we are supposed to download without any detailed instructions as to what has happened to magicjack, which requires a plug in to a usb port. Now I can not even get to the Magicjack website..if you punch this in all you get is an add for Magictalk and no access to help.

Exactly, exactly the same experience, I am using magicjack yesterday and today I can't and I have several years left on the 5 year plan I paid for. Now, I can't make calls at all, the magictalk won't download anything that I am aware of. I am plugged into a usb port and still doesn't work.

Does anyone know what we do next?

Thank you in advance.

Same problem. My settings are frozen. I can hear incoming callers but they cannot hear me. If I go to Help I get an ad for a new magicjack. I feel like I am being pressured into the new sevice. Don't want magictalk. Good bye magicjack. Looking for other options.
