Was using "betamax" for making cheap calls your worst nightmare? If we make a poll, more than 70% would say I am fed up of Betamax. Till date, there was really no solid alternative to Betamax,so people just stuck to them. However, today I am going to post one solid alternative which will make you uninstall your betamax softphone :-)
I often receive emails from blog readers about "What is the best VOIP Service to call India , Middle East, Australia or UK or take any other country for that matter". I advice them on using a VOIP service which has following:
1) Good Voice Quality
2) Competitive Calling Rates
3) Customer Support
4) Ease of Use (No jokes, over 60% first time users have no clue how to use the softphone)
Now I don't have to reiterate that Betamax doesn't qualify on any of these "prerequisites" besides the rates probably. However, whats the use of a cheap calling service if you don't have good quality and horrible customer service. When was the last time, you ever heard from betamax?
Now Lets talk about what we found, a new VOIP service from Netherlands which truly fits in our "4" pre-requisites.
Its called Fastvoip. FastVoip is based in netherlands and it does look very similar to Betamax, its not owned by them or even dellmont sarl for that matter.

Calls to india are 1.5 cents per minute ?? (not 1 cent/min). Please rectify.
When try to pay by visa card they want to charge a transaction fee of 0.50 + tax of 2 Eur along with 10 and total payment of 12.5/- I backed off at that point.
I just tried it, seeing that, i would have to spend just 10 dollars. I am seeing my credit card transaction, it was not $10, it was $16.64.... So kindly be careful. Its 10 Euros.NOT dollars. So Vinay,its a misinformation you have provided. Kindly correct it. Also, Everytime, you want to make a call through your phone, you should reememeber your 10 digit card number and also every time you have to dial your whole number which you want to call. THere is no speed dial. I would never go for this. I would rather go with "pinlessworld" which gives me all the points which mentioned at a rate of 1.48 cents per minute and an option to buy for $5, there is no expiration date here.

Can you make local mobile calls from this service. For instance, if i download the dialer onto my mobile, will i be able to bypass etisalat and call local nos from my mobile.
I have uninstalled Jumblo(Betamax)only to reinstall it again. Jumblo charges 0.9 euro cent for India. Fast voip charges 1 euro cent. By applying the discount coupon it comes down to 0.75 euro cents. I thought it is a great deal,instantly signed up. When I was buying the credit I saw these guys are charging 2 euro as VAT. Being in US I don't pay this to Jumblo. 2nd advantage in Jumblo is it recognises my cell phone numbers while acessing the local access number as it had been added while creating a account with Jumblo. These guys are giving some 10 digits ID which is difficult to remember and it is going to be biggest drawback for them. I am not buying this as long as call charges to India cellphone less than 0.9 euro cent and adding of my cell phone number instead of 10 digit ID also no VAT being charged. If these conditions are met, certainly I will change my base from Jumblo to fastvoip.

if FV reduce the call rate to Bangladesh below 2 euro cent and add UKASH as a purchase option , then i will certainly shift toward FV.

I did shoot an email to FastVoip regarding the card id and the speed dial issue. The solution provided by them just works incredible. Like other providers they are also developing speed dial and automatic card id recognition when you call from the same phone.
But for now, this is the solution with a slight modification by me.
This is TESTED and Working Method.
If you you live in US,
1) Add a new contact
2) Enter: 1-877-531-3744
3) Hold * until the P appears
4) Enter your card id number followed by a #
5) Hold * until the P appears
6) Enter your destination number. For example, if you are calling India, dial 0091-(STD Code without 0)-(Phone number) followed by a #
7)Save your contact
So next time if you are calling the same number in India, you just need to go to you contact and dial once from your phone.
You do not need to enter the card id and the phone number every time.

I am using 2 services at the same time: localphone (great service) and webcalldirect (from Betamax, for a reason: cheapest price that no where I can find). FastVoip is more expensive, ex for France and VietNam are 2 countries I call the most

Its good to have alternative of Betamax .. kudos to Fastvoip but Nymgo is doing this for long .. they are charging 0.011 US cents / min.
n 1 Euro cents goes to 0.013 or upto the bank how they charge you !!

Good to have cheap alternatives to call India. This will further reduce the price.
The bad new for customers whom come from Vietnam that we couldn't have a great rate as indian people. Compared to other service, fastvoip is really not best choice. Hope in the near future, the rate will be decreased. If that is true, i will feeling free to introduce for all my friends.

Reason, password was mailed to me which is supposed to be secret, now I doubt on security and privacy.
Second Jumblo lists rates including VAT as well, to India its 0.01 euros including VAT. Also not sure weather promotional code is working.

First up, Let me tell you that they are ready to return your money immediately. However, I suggest you read my comment further to resolve this issue.
It seems you are not able to setup the SIP credentials on your Nokia phone and also have trouble logging into your softphone. Fastvoip told me they can help you using teamviewer. Teamviewer is a PC sharing software and I personally use it for my day to day work. Its totally secure to use.
If you still have trouble with login or setting up your Nokia phone with fastvoip, they are ready to help you via teamviewer or call you to walkthrough.
Honestly, you won't get any better support than this. I have never seen any VOIP company do this for their customers on personal basis.
All you have to do now, is ask for their help or ask them to return your money, which they are ready to return immediately with any questions.

I am having O.93 euro in my Fast VOIP account and I can not call India now. I guess it is due to my account balance less than a euro. If fast Voip is justifying this then it means they are forcing me to buy the credit eventhough I have 93mins legal talktime in my account. I don't think it would work and Jumblo is better in this aspect. They don't force you or anything even if the account balance becomes zero. Today I recharged my Jumblo account instead fast voip. I will not recharge Fast voip unless the account balance becomes zero. Incase if this is not possible then I just say thanks for the business. My id is nics04.

there is draw back in their system system as it does not allow to create a user id based on figures only. It requires a combination of alphabets/figures.
I a user want to use a SIP device then how he can dial alphabets using their handset? If they allow user id based on figures only then a user can call another user easily using SIP device or IP phone.

I have been trying to buy credit form their website, but all attempts are met with the following statement - "Payment not completed, please try again or choose another pay method".
I contacted the support guys, but they came up with a reply dat my transaction is being picked up because it seems to be "hitting their fraud rules". I explained back dat i was in the US and was using a CC dat was issued in India and dat i am travelling... But unfortunately der seems to be no update from them with only a token promise of more payment options being added asap dat was on Oct 14th..

FastVoiP seemed to be working nicely till this morning I tried making a call, the called party responded but couldn't hear my voice, when I disconnected the call, somehow no money was detected BUT now I can't make any further calls, it says YOUR ACCOUNT IS LOCKED, I tried searching their site or internet for getting to know how to unlock my account, but there's no text!! I know another person who faced the same issue. I've around 10Euros already in my account. Do you have any suggestions on how to get this fixed and have my account unlocked???

This is the fact that nymgo is the best and cheapest option available at present i.e. only 1.1 cents for mobile phone in India. The voice quality is excellent and the customer support through email is also acceptable. I am using there service from last two years and never had any issues. Enjoy calling and save money. If you are using other VOIP softphone including Xlite or any other betamax softphone, fastvoip softphone closes automatically when you click on login. Close the other softphone and then start fastvoip.
This is a known bug and guess they are working on this
The software sucks tho the customer support is good.

When I check the rate to India it says 0.005 Euro per minute. Jumblo costs 0.009 Euro per minute. After reading the blog commetns I am not getting clear idea about the rates. I have created account and charged $10 but now i can't make a call out. I am using asterisk and i am getting 488 error. Emailed them couple of times with my settings but still no response. I replied to the email and mentioned that was not the case. there is difference between the username and password. Can't understand how you missing it and it took me bunch of email to make you understand the difference. Now i am told that i will get some email from some other support team. Hope they would sort it out. May be the checking the kamailio at your end will revel some.

Recently, cannot add credit to account. When choosing to add credit FV goes on SMS verification page. Then for a long time nothing happens. No SMS arrives nor any verification is done. Error message comes "cannot send SMS. Try again"

i took antiblock technology soft phone from datasoft but it is not working. their call centre staff is very stupid may be knowingly they did not understand after even 40 emails that UAE is blocking their anti block technology. they hv not returned my money . so be careful.

This is working perfectly in UAE via Nimbuzz and not dierctly from their softphone. So please use via Nimbuzz. Its voice quality also good. No need for VPN or Hotspot Shield.

FASTVOIP has calling noise and no one can listen or talk with this noise .
as soon i dial n ring tone starts a noise also starts . so i can not listen any thing .

I am fastvoip with sipdroid on android, out bound calls works ok but incoming call in sipdroid are dropped only for fastvoip sip saying incompatible codec so for sure, codecs used in fast voip are different than other sip provider but is there any way I can choose codec? or any other guidence to avoid this problem of incoming sip calls?

Who says it is not a Betamax company? Definitely it is. I signed up and when I transferred the money I found that their account details are already there in my bank account which is for Betamax. I am not saying that Betamax is not good. I have been using them for years and never had any problem except once.

I am using fastvoip for the last 3 months, from yesterday while calling "Call failed (card blocked)" message is appearing & I could not make calls.. same is the case with my colleague also. We are using this facility in S.Korea. I have sent email to fastvoip support also but didn't get any reply yet. Could you please provide a solution to the problem. Thanks !

Has anyone tried the Fastvoip SIP with a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7240. Somehow the SIP settings don't seem to work (I have other voip accounts which work with the Fritz!Box).

I got the message account locked.Log out and log in again.Call local number either to your friend nearby or to your own number.It will get unlocked.Now you can make a call wherever you wish

i am calling to India and i am unable to listen the bell ring of the call receiver and other party is receiving the call then we both were unable to listen our voices
i request the customer care to answer about my queries
I paid 12,50 (10 euro + 2.33 euro VAT + transaction costs) and i'll get 12,50 balance but i got 10 euro
i dint know what happening with this service

Although they offer free calls to a number of Countries especially INDIA, you can imagine the quality that you get for free.
I bought credit of 10Euros and half of them are gone just like that because the receiver cannot hear me and I don't even know that it is connected or not.
FastVoip should improve.

Betamax services are better options. Even if the services are blocked in UAE we can use the softwares through hotspot or vpn. But there is a problem in fastvoip software even if using hotspot and vpn.
Very bad service Neither I hear the ring nor the voice. Paid 12.33Eurosm but got 10 as credit. And the amount is lost since I get charged but both of us could not listen to each other. The saddest part is today I could not even listen ring to audoitest.
I am not able to make any calls. In Windows 7, it is showing "Call failed - unknown error" and in Windows Vista, neither I am able to hear the ringing sound nor I am able to hear back what the other party is talking. Also the person at the other end is not able to hear what I am saying. But it is charging me money. Such a horrible service really. I emailed the customer support and they told last week that it will be fixed by June 4. But now they stopped replying as well. Can anyone please tell me how to get my money back. I agree fastvoip have a lot of problems . The free access number from the UK not working. Other access numbers are equally unreliable. Could somebody at fastvoip deal with these issues please.
There is interference in telephone call as well. I am afraid fastvoip needs to improve quite a lot to match betamax.

Fastvoip doesn't support Fritzbox SIP Connection. I got the answer from fastvoip support. Very awefull
Happy fastvoip/Macbook/X-lite 4 user since 6 months. Sometimes connection is impossible..last few weeks hardly any connection possible through X-Lite 4 on pc. So just downloaded nimbuzz for android. installation is very easy. connected with fastvoip account quickly. so up and running to make a call within 5 minutes. I could hear the receiver but they could not hear me..everytime I spoke the line was completely disturbed. So a normal call is not possible.
Anyone there to give me some tips what I can do?
guys, i spoke to the FastVoip team this week and they are currently working on adding more (4-6) servers to the datacenter which should be able to take the load.
The issue is mainly with lot of people making free calls to destinations such as India and Bangladesh which takes up a lot of bandwidth with simulate nous calls. This issue should be resolved within 1-2 weeks. If not, I will pressurize them to fix this ASAP. Hang in there lads :-)
The fastvoip software for pc does not works, everytime you try to make a call it says unknown error, its frustrating, another frustrating thing is that you need to input your pin number everytime you make a call and most of the time it fails to recognise your pin, but when it works no issues with voice quality.

I have been with Betamax for a few year now and it works fine. But I signed up for FV today due to the competitive rates, and its not working! :-(
Tried using my VOIP Adapter (it works fine with Betamax), windows client installed on laptop didn't work and it needs a few tries to get through using the local access number.
I have emailed FV support with details. After that I discovered and tried the Symbian client and that too didn't work!
I have gone back & charged my Betamax account for now.

It has been 13 days and FastVOIP has still not responded to my email, non-existant customer service?
Also, now they have emailed saying they are ending the promotion so India landline will be charged instead of FREE. On their website this was never published as a promotion!! It was just a way of attracting customers!

I too had a very bad experience with FastVoip. The customer support is useless, and they are not willing to refund the money if the service is not working. Here are some of the issue I encountered.
1. You will always need to dial '+' to make an international call. Many landline phones don't support it rendering the service useless to call from home phones.
2. The call drops ever few minutes.
3. The voice quality is not good, although workable.
4. Customer support sucks. They reply once a day, with some vague answers.
Since I was not able to use the service from home phone I asked them for any other alternative like 00 or 011 instead of '+' to make an international call. They responded that their IT is working on it and they will let me know once the issue is resolved. It has been almost a month and no reply on on this issue. Every time I email them I get the same response. They also dont refund money so be careful.
At this point, I dont think this is a great service, even though betamax site doesnt have good customer care, they do have better service than fastvoip at this point.
Also the prices have increased now to nearly US 1c/min.

I opened my FV account sometime in May (22nd, I if I'm not mistaken). I guess FV offers 120 free-days. But when I logged in a few of days back, my profile showed 0 free-days.
Any idea why this is happening?
Furthermore, I am not able to set my caller ID - I keep getting a msg: "An unknown error occurred".
I've tried reaching out to them but I am yet to receive a response.
I'd really appreciate any help/advice.
PS: I have been rather p*ssed at their call quality. Calls drop like swatted flies! But I must say that it has improved over the past few weeks. Have you been experiencing something like that, btw?

to be honest, I didnt hear a lot from fastvoip lately. They are in business but i guess they are now mainly focusing on improving customer service. I will try to find more this week and update.
Since August 26th i cant all Pakistan using Fastvoip. What's the problem? I can call other countries. Does anybody have the same problem?
Does anyone know if FastVOIP supports Caller ID? The website has an option to verify your phone number by entering a verification code, but the verified number is not used as Caller ID? On the other hand, Caller ID works fine with Betamax.
