Skype pressuring UK Mobile operators to lift ban

UK mobile operators are perhaps the most notorious mobile companies in the world, famously known to increase rates, shut down cheaper services or just make consumers life more difficult.

However, It seems Skype is finally taking a stand against the industry bullying mobile operators in the UK. VOIP has surely threatened these operators in many ways. Mobile terminations rates continue to remain high despite of the overall VOIP adaption.

At this very time, Skype is banned on Orange and T-mobile with Vodafone slapping a monthly fee to use Skype service. Only O2 and 3UK allow skype calls on their network.

With 3 major telecom providers blocking or slapping fees to use Skype, their service is pretty much flushed out. In fact, Skype has lodged a complaint with UK telecom regulator Ofcom last year, claiming its services were being hampered by mobile operators. Ofcom has now confirmed they will intervene in this issue.

Can ofcom pull this off in favour of Skype? In my opinion, Not so soon. The mobile operator lobby is really strong in UK and they will ensure that this gets delayed, dragged and won't happen soon. Till then, you unlucky UK fellas can try some of more awesome UK based VOIP services like Localphone.

Google Voice Calls now available in 38 Countries

Google Voice finally went international in 38 countries. After years of offering the free calls service in US and Canada, now people outside of US can enjoy this amazing portability service which lets you connect and receive calls via a single google voice number.

Starting today, if you use Gmail you might see an Call button under the chat list on the left side in your gmail. Try logging in and check if you see it enabled. I believe you still need the Google Voice Plugin which needs to be installed. (I already have it so am not sure if its directly connected to gmail voice calls). If prompted, then you must download it.

Although Gmail Voice calls are extended its not very clear whether the Google Voice service and one number portability is available outside of USA. You can try if you actually get an access to it. From the Google Voice blog post, it seems its only a gmail voice calling feature and doesn't actually give you access to Google Voice features.

However, its not a free international calling service as you still have to pay charge per minute. They have lowered the calling rates to over 150 destinations around the world. For example, it’s now only $0.10 (or €0.08) per minute to call mobile phones in the U.K., France or Germany (landlines are $0.02/min), $0.15/minute to call mobile phones in Mexico and $0.02/min to call any phone number in China and India.

Please note that if you live in US or canada, you can continue to call US and Canada for free but people outside of USA, will not be able to call free to these countries. All calls originated from outside of US, will be charged at 1 cent per minute to US & Canada.

Skype finally released the much awaited Skype for iPad app which is specifically designed to use the bigger space on ipad for users benefit. In my opinion, its one of the t apps for iPad so far.

I installed it the moment i knew of its release and made a few video calls. Whoa the screen size + Video clarity is awesome even on 3G. I am yet to try the Wifi (at home connectivity) to see if that gives the app an edge over 3g when it comes to streaming video.

BSNL launched VVOIP service in India to enable audio and video conferencing

BSNL has kicked off a "Beta" launch of Audio and Video conferencing and call service (VVOIP) in India. However, The first phase is only available for Ahmadabad residents. BSNL expects to extend the reach across India by March 2012.

To be frank, Its very unlikely that they will be launching this across India before end of 2012 considering their overall track records and delays in implementing services.

The customers will be charged 40 paise per minute for audio and Rs. 2 per minute for video calls within the country over VVoIP. The international call charges are also pretty low as a call to the US will cost Rs. 1.20 per minute, to the UK it will cost Rs. 1.20 on landline, Rs. 7.20 to mobile, and Rs. 1.20 per minute to China. BSNL will offer the VVoIP services at a monthly rental of Rs. 150 only.

In a solid move to enter the VOIP market and give big G some serious competition, Microsoft has agreed to buy Skype for $8.15 billion dollars. Lets quickly understand how this move affects skype users like you.

The boards of both companies have agreed to the deal, as Ballmer will now head Skype directly. Skype has finally released their much awaited Android Skype App. Skype is now available on a wide range of Android phones.

With the new Skype Android app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates over WiFi or 3G.

All your existing skype account will work on your Skype android app as well.

You can download Skype from the Android Market, or from Skype.com/m on your phone. You’ll need Android OS 2.1 or later. In order to check android version, go to Settings > About. If you don't have Android OS 2.1+, update your OS first before installing skype android app.

Now Make Free Calls to USA Canada from your Gmail Account

Woot! Its finally here. The much awaited feature to enable google voice via Gmail account has been launched. Shall we call it Gmail Voice? If its not available right now to your gmail, it will eventually roll-out within next week or so.

In order to use the Google Voice service via gmail, you will have to install the free voice and video chat plugin to your Gmail account.

Once you installed the plugin, In your Gmail account chat window, a new "Call phone" option will appear. Once you click on call, you will see a number pad just like google voice or google talk, on which you can dial the phone you'd like to call. If you have a google voice number, it will automatically appear as the outbound caller ID and can be used to receive calls within Gmail.

This simply takes away the pain of setting up the Google Voice + Gizmo + IPKALL setup many people using right now to make calls or receive calls.

After Blackberry India might ban Google Voice and Skype

India is on the verge of cracking on the messaging and voice based services which sends encrypted data which is not readable over internet. There is a strong rumour that after Blackberry India might be looking at possible ban for Skype and Google Voice.

Blackberry got into serious trouble last few weeks after Indian and Saudi Arabian government demanded RIM to make them available all messages sent via blackberry which is currently not possible as RIM servers are not in India or Saudi Arabia.

I personally do not use Blackberry as I have nothing do hide about :-) but I know people who are totally shocked this decision, they don't want the government to know about their activities, personal, social or business.

Although Indian government have given RIM upto Aug 31 to fix this issue, no one knows if RIM can comply to the demands.

Today, Financial Times reports that after blackberry, India will target Google Voice and Skype. Why would they do that? Well, they basically don't want you to do activities which can't be traced back to you.

"There was consensus that there [is] more than one type of service for which solutions are to be explored. Some of them are BlackBerry, Skype, Google etc," according to the department's minutes. "It was decided first to undertake the issue of BlackBerry and then the other services."

Reliance communications is one of the largest telecommunication firm in India and the world. The name "Reliance" is enough for you to trust reliance icall. However, Users are mad at Reliance icall. Lets see why.

I have seen bunch of people almost everyday posting their bad experience with reliance icall VOIP service. Lets look at most of the common issues.

1) Call disconnection and call drop: Calls gets randomly disconnected or dropped at a few seconds or minutes.

Free Calls to USA with Google Voice and Gizmo

Lot of people emailed me lately saying they can't make free calls to USA anymore since most of the free calls providers pulled the plug on "Free calls to USA". However, One of our long time reader NYPhoneJacks shared an interesting and new method to make free calls to USA with google voice and Gizmo.

NyPhoneJacks explained why this new method is required since the old way of using Google Voice with SIP doesn't work anymore. The new method requires you to have 2 google voice accounts for this to work.

This should work with other SIP providers as well - as long as you have a DID that you can associate your Google Voice number with the first google voice account (this account is not going to be the one that appears on CID of outgoing calls, so if you already have a GV number that you want to use for the CID info use that as the other GV account, and make a new one for this) make your gizmo account a forwarding phone (or your sip provider with a free DID) add your second google voice number as a contact, so that you can easily go in to contacts and click the call button - choose the gizmo account (or your SIP provider from the drop down menu) it is best if this account is set to do not disturb, or set up so that click to call calls are sent straight to voice mail.

since you can not add a google voice number as a forwarding number, you will need to enter * then your pin number every time you access your second (main) google voice account. When you have access to your GV account, you can press 2 to make outgoing calls to the US and CAN for free.

Apple ipad has been received solid media attention since its public announcement. Ipad has already hit the apple stores and has received a fair share of positive and negative reviews.

Lot of people ask me, would you buy a Apple iPad? I am still not very confident about buying one for several reasons such as lack of camera (webcam), USB port. However, it seems for true VOIP fans like me, we have one positive reason to try Apple iPad.

O2 buys Jajah VOIP for $200 Million

Jajah came to spotlight a few years ago and since their early launch have been extremely successfully in creating marketing buzz. Definitely enough to get massive funding and now a buyout deal.

Jajah intially launched as a Free Calling Service created massive media buzz since it was one of the first free international call service launched. Jajah became popular thanks to first mover advanage. Soon, they realised that you can't burn VC's money so fast that you need to ask for more funding every quarter. However by then Jajah had millions of users which they can now hope to convert into paid users. We don't know the numbers but i believe about 5% users might have converted into paid customers from free users which is still not bad considering its popularity.

Jajah in the mean time, kept pushing its brand via media awareness, press releases. At once, I remember Jajah released press releases almost every week some of they were prolly not so "News worthy". However, we must note that Jajah was perhaps the only and most successful VOIP venture next to GrandCentral who managed to get significant funding and now a solid buyout deal.

Jajah also raise many eyebrows when they taken over the Yahoo Voice platform and its userbase. A significant move in terms of expansion and improving its brand.

O2 finally snatched Jajah for $200 million dollars. This indicates 2 things, VOIP hold massive potential in the long run and Mobile operators have realised that VOIP could crush their earnings, so why not join the party and get the fair share.

However, Its important to note that not all VOIP Providers will get $200 millions. Jajah was special in many ways and i think they are worth the price. However, Honestly Jajah doesn't anymore provide cheap international call service, there are many VOIP Provider in the world who are cheaper than Jajah. However, Brand value and perception can sell anything, so why not a costly "Cheap VOIP service". Sure they are people who are ready to premium just to use Jajah. Guess O2 won't bother much :-)

NBC Communicator VOIP Service Review

NBC is desparate to get back on track and it seems they are trying to use VOIP as backdoor to gain important in social media.

NBC.com has launched a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) application which lets you make free calls and free txt amongst users and at the same time, get involved with NBC.com news etc.

The VOIP application is called NBC communicator and you can download it off their official website. With the communicator application and you can make and receive calls. Communicator also gives you features such as Caller ID of the person calling and texting for free. Initially we thought that its a free PC to Phone VOIP service, however it only seem to work for PC to PC like Skype or yahoo messenger.

We do not see any reason why people would even want to test this VOIP application considering no added value besides watching some shows online, which you can do otherwise at far more superior websites. The element of using "VOIP" as a medium of communication itself lacks in this application.

NBC seem to have failed again with this gimmick. VOIP is not a game for news companies or media company. If it takes solid effort for VOIP providers to establish themselves, it would take lot more for Media companies to engage consumers to use their VOIP platform.

Skype settles Lawsuit with JoltID over VOIP software Ownership

Skype really struggled this year with Lawsuit over proprietary P2P VOIP software technology. Finally, Skype managed to settle with JoltID, which is a great news for Ebay,Skype and Silver Lake Investor Group.

As per the official Press Release, Ebay (Skype) and Silver Lake has reached a settlement agreement with Joltid Limited and Joost N.V. that gives Skype ownership over all software previously licensed from Joltid and ends all litigation currently pending against the investor group and eBay at the closing of the acquisition.

In return, Joltid and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis will join the investor group, contributing Joltid software and making a significant capital investment in exchange for a 14 percent stake in Skype.

If you don't know already, Silver Lake along with other investors are going to buy Skype for USD 1.9 billion and the deal is expected to close in last quarter of 2009.

While the lawsuit was filed, Skype was examining the possibility of creating their own piece of code for the Skype p2p softphone and technology, however now the roadmap is clear for Skype. This should not only take some burden off but will help Skype in big way.

Skype now must concentrate on integrating and fully supporting SIP Protocol and if possible try to acquire Gizmo5.
